Between dunderheaded instructors who refuse to impart any advice on the topic beyond "it's all in the wrist," and an Internet littered with more 'fixes' than you can shake a stick at, there are plenty of reasons why you might be tempted to give up and assume that your writing is worthless.Let me ask you a question: do you write without a strategy? Do you just start, let the muscle memory do its work, and then go back? Do your characters have to guide your hand?Do you try to guess what the readers want to see from your characters? Usually subconsciously, probably. Chances are, you go where your characters want to go.If this is true for you, you should ask yourself:1) Are my characters' actions logical? Do their actions make sense based on the plot and other factors like genre and tone? Are they making decisions that they can be proud of? (This includes moral decisions; if your character murders someone in the first chapter, that should be something he or she is proud of.)2) Are their reactions to these results justified? Will this action result in something that the reader will find engaging and realistic? (Is there a chance for a happy ending?) If readers aren't interested, then your work will feel flat. And if you don't engage the readers, then they will not engage with your story. They will not engage you.3) Do the actions and reactions of your characters build up to a larger purpose? This one is very important. If you merely react to everything that frustrates you, then the 'story' that results will likewise be frustrating for your readers.Here is how it work: Imagine that there is a piece of music and there are hundreds and thousands of little marbles bouncing around on a rubber sheet (like bowling pins) in time with the music. Now, imagine a ballerina. She is a very skilled ballerina. She has been dancing her whole life. She has been practicing hard for years and years. In fact, she is the best dancer in the world… but still, her life will be dominated by balls. Balls will come at her from every direction and she will have to react to all of them — and thus she will never truly dance — because all she will do is react to balls… on her way to having a "story.
